We will study advanced styles of jazz singing, challenging repertoire, song interpretation and arrangement, solo presentation to the class, scat singing and relevant musicianship.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You are expected to have completed Jazz singing courses at advanced level. Newcomers should demonstrate at audition equivalent jazz experience and ability. You will have a good understanding of this kind of music, jazz protocols, and have an established singing technique.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Vocal warm up together and technical exercises. Demonstrations by your tutor and accompanist and sample recordings to study. Solo performances with constructive criticism from your tutor and classmates. Share ideas and good practice.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The tutor will provide songs for study, and you are expected to bring songs of your own choice with appropriate charts for the accompanist.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Advanced level jazz courses are scheduled regularly.
Laura is a highly regarded teacher of jazz and popular singing. Although specialising in Jazz, Laura has studied with some of the top vocal teachers nationally and internationally, giving her an in-depth understanding of the techniques applicable to many vocal styles. She has experience of working with top laryngologists, speech therapists, osteopaths and physiotherapists all working in the field of vocal health. Laura has been featured in an article in the Guardian Arts Section, giving instruction in the art of jazz singing and also in the Sunday Telegraph Lifestyle section, helping someone get over their fear of singing. Laura studied jazz and popular singing at Middlesex University and in New York with Nancy Marano from the Manhattan School of Music. Well established on the London jazz scene, Laura has released four well-received albums, each curating fresh and classy readings of the Great American Songbook alongside unexpected pop tunes. She now collaborates with composer Martin Pyne, writing original material for her recently released EP.

Clare Foster is a vocalist, lyricist, composer and educator. Born in England, she has studied and worked in New York, Holland, Canada, England and in many countries in Europe and Asia. She has taught at the City Lit for over twenty years, and has also taught at Morley College, Trinity College of Music and in a Finnish conservatoire. In 2017 Clare trained on a Bangor University course to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR). She uses many of these techniques in her current classes and has designed a mindfulness course tailored to singers. Her interests lie in how the psyche impacts on the voice. She specialises in Jazz and Brazilian music repertoire and vocal approach and also teaches on a one-to-one basis in London.
