What is the course about?
The course is designed for people who have had previous experience with the program or have completed the Sketchup Pro For Beginners course. Sketchup has many advance features that lend themselves well to visualising your projects to a higher level of detail. This will include creating more organic shapes, photomatching projects to put them in context and an introduction to the popular Sketchup rendering extension Podium.
What will we cover?
- Creating 3D images directly on the computer
- Visualising the model from different view points
- Saving scenes to generate a video file
- Editing textures to add translucency and colour
- Working with Photomatch images
- Creating more complex shapes using Sandbox
- Rendering the finished model using Podium.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create fully detailed spaces in 3D
- Create more complex 3D objects
- Edit materials to add transparency and pattern
- Edit materials to alter colour
- Add photorealism to renders via Podium
- Place projects in context via Photomatch.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is not a beginners course. You will need a good basic understanding of SketchUp Pro and be confident in
using the basic systems of a computer and be familiar with a mouse. (or have completed SketchUp Pro for
beginners course). You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs
and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use
numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual
assistance and hand-outs.
We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks, notes and resources. You will be sent an email with the necessary information and will need to login into your Google classroom before each sessions starts.
We will work on Apple computers with software Google SketchUp Pro. The course consists of discussions and demonstrations and group and individual advice and guidance on personal projects.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. The latest software is available for your use throughout
the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives
can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.).

Nick Williamson studied both Interior Design and 3D Design, subsequently working as an interior designer for hospitality projects including Rank Hotels and as the senior designer for high street retailer W H Smith. He then returned to study – graduating with an MA in Furniture Design - after which he set up as an independent furniture designer/maker making bespoke pieces for both corporate and private clients. He now combines his design work with teaching and is a design tutor and lecturer at several design schools, universities and colleges. A personal interest in CAD software has led to him specialising in Vectorworks, AutoCAD and SketchUp. He enjoys showing students the possibilities of what these programs can achieve and is experienced at teaching at all levels.
