It's Time to Talk...
The ‘Time to Talk’ Awareness Day (3rd February 2022) offers everyone a chance to start up conversations about mental health, with the aim of ‘taking the stigma out of something that affects us all’. Time to Talk Day this year especially wants to promote the message that no one should be made to feel ashamed because of a mental health issue. They’re encouraging you to reach out and ask someone how they’re doing – and not to fear expressing how you really feel.
There are multiple benefits for your mental health by talking about it.
Here are just some of the ways talking can support your mental health:
- If you’re stressed, anxious or depressed then it can feel terribly isolating inside your head. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with another person can feel a wonderful release.
- Putting your feelings into words can help you gain perspective on your problems. Instead of feeling consumed by them you may start to gain a little distance from your issues and an ability to see things differently.
- Hearing the story you tell yourself can highlight where you might want to make changes in how you behave, how you react, and how you relate.
- It can be a validating experience to have someone listen to you, not judge you, and reassure you that what you’re going through is understandable and relatable.
- Talking to someone – and to be truly heard – can be a heartening experience and bring you closer to people, helping to create a better quality of relationship in your life. It can also create hope. When you think about it: some things really are better out than in.
