Every term, we look for new people to join us to ensure our courses are ever more inclusive of our global past and present, continue to explore timely and socially relevant subjects and offer exciting prospects of expanding horizons.

This time we introduce to you: Çağlar, Chris, Hazel, Judy and Siobhán!

Çağlar Ezikoglu

Dr. Çağlar Ezikoglu is an expert in international politics, Middle East and Turkish politics and political economy, with an MA from in European politics from the University of Sussex and a PhD in International Politics from Aberystwyth University in 2019. Widely published, he’s presented at numerous conferences around the world in the study of international politics. He currently teaches at the University of Birmingham in the Department of Political Science and International Studies and he has taught at the university level in the UK and Turkey. He has been teaching courses in political science, international relations, economics, history and sociology. He has been nominated for the Political Studies Association Sir Bernard Crick Teaching Prize and British International Studies Association Early Career Excellence Teaching Prize in 2024. He is the recipient of the competitive UK Global Talent Visa. At City Lit, Çağlar will teach politics courses, exploring the politics of cities, unions and strikes in the 21st century, Turkey, the Middle East and global political economy. 

Chris Hale

Chris Hale is a veteran documentary producer and award winning author of five non-fiction books. He holds a Masters/LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of Edinburgh, specialising in genocide. As a producer, he focused on science stories for the prestigious BBC strand Horizon. As a non-fiction author, Chris has researched and written highly original works about the Holocaust and colonial history in SE Asia. These include ‘Hitler’s Foreign Executioners: Europe’s Dirty Secret’ (2008, 2022) which exposed the non-German murder squads recruited by the SS and ‘Deception’ (2017) about the Hungarian Holocaust. As a producer and executive producer, Chris has worked extensively in South and Southeast Asia where he established a documentary production unit in Singapore. His books ‘Massacre in Malaya’ (2013) and ‘A Brief History of Singapore and Malaysia’ (2023) focused on the impact of European colonial powers. 

Hazel Baker

Hazel is an accomplished and award-winning tour guide with a passion for history, theatre, walking, and the vibrancy of London. She began her guiding career in 2014 after qualifying at Westminster University. A decade in, Hazel has led more than 3,000 walking tours in London, each delivering a blend of factual depth and engaging storytelling. Hazel’s dedication and excellence in tour guiding have been recognised with the Tour Guiding Excellence Award and the Best Christmas Tours in London award. Hazel also hosts the London History Podcast, exploring the often underrated history of the city with special guests or fellow guides She has appeared as an expert on television shows like Walking Wartime Britain, The Architecture the Railways Built, Het Rampjaar 1672, Afl. 2: Vijand Engeland, and Arte.fr Invitation au Voyage, À Chelsea, une femme qui trompe énormément. She also featured in Secrets of the London Underground and is set to appear in a new programme for 2024. On radio, she has shared her insights with Robert Elms on Radio London and Jumoke Fashola on BBC Radio London. Hazel has a forthcoming book, Tudor Palaces of London, set to be published in October 2024.

Judy Johnson

Judy holds degrees in biology, chemistry and criminology and has worked in both care and education. Now teaching, working as a lab technician and running her own pottery instruction courses, Judy likes to keep busy and wants to bring people into her subjects to expand their horizons. Judy is excited to start teaching at City Lit where she will offer courses in forensic science. If you are curious, want inspiration for your whodunnit novel or play or want to take what you remember from your biology and chemistry classes in a new direction, Judy’s classes are for you! 

Siobhán McGuirk

Siobhán is a researcher, journalist, educator and filmmaker who specializes in migration & borders, sexuality & gender, social justice movements, and art, curation and collaborative methods, and works as an editor and columnist for Red Pepper Magazine. She has appeared on podcasts, spoken at festivals, produced films and curated exhibitions. Having also taught at universities in both Washington and London, Siobhán will be teaching politics courses that explore the connections between migration, sexuality and gender, capitalism and social justice movements at City Lit.
