Meet our new Fellows!

A ten times Oscar winner; a Booker Prize winning former writing student; a playwright, broadcaster and critic; and a national mental health champion.

This year we welcome four more wonderfully talented and highly committed Fellows: Anna Burns, Bonnie Greer OBE, Paul Farmer and Lord Puttnam of Queensgate CBE.

Anna Burns

Anna Burns studied fiction writing at City Lit. The Belfast-born writer is an award-winning author and wrote the three novels: No Bones, Little Constructions and Milkman. Milkman won the Man Booker Prize 2018, the 2019 Orwell Prize for political fiction and the International Dublin Literary Award in 2020, and was shortlisted for both the Women’s Prize and the Rathbones Folio Prize.

“I'm thrilled and honoured to be offered a City Lit Fellowship Award. I gained so much during the time I attended classes at Keeley Street. I spent a happy time there, mainly singing and dancing and - most of all - writing. And I thank the staff, the tutors and the building itself for the wonderful opportunities and benefits I received during my time there.”

Her plays have been produced in London, Chicago, New York City, and at the Edinburgh Festival. Bonnie is a former Deputy Chair of the British Museum and has been on the boards of RADA; the Royal Opera House; and the Serpentine Gallery.

"I am proud and happy to be honoured by an institution that was founded on the principle that the life of the mind is the right of us all. And that still exists in the light of that principle."

Paul Farmer CBE

Paul Farmer has been a supporter of the College and a regular speaker at the Mental Wealth Festival for many years. Paul has been Chief Executive of Mind, the leading mental health charity working in England and Wales since May 2006. He is also Chair of the NHS England Independent Oversight & Advisory Group which brings together health and care leaders and experts to oversee the current mental health long term plan for the NHS in England.

“It is typically kind and generous of City Lit to offer me a Fellowship, which I’m honoured to receive. City Lit plays such an important role in so many people’s lives, and the Mental Wealth Festival is now an established feature of the mental health calendar, constantly innovating and challenging our thinking, as well as encouraging reflective conversations about our wellbeing.”
