— Main points

  • City Lit catches up with Wendy Allen, poetry student
  • We find out more how City Lit tutor Julie Irigaray helped Wendy discover her passion for poetry

Q: What courses have you studied at City Lit?

A: I did my initial poetry course with Julie Irigaray and I fell in love with poetry. Julie introduced me to poets I had never read I feel there is a definite influence from this class in the themes of sex and the body in all of my work. I then applied to do the Masterclass with Ella Frears and I did two advanced poetry workshops, one with Alycia Pirmohamed and one with Sarah Wardle.

Q: What made you decide to study at City Lit?

A: I liked how accessible the prices were and how many courses they offered. I was impressed by the different levels of entry City Lit offered and how many amazing poets teach here.

Q: What your role does writing play in your life?

A: Writing is a huge part of my life now. I am studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University and am hoping to do a PhD. I have found that I am interested in merging sculpture and poetry and this is something I wish to concentrate on in the future.

Q: Any exciting writing projects coming up?

A: My next pamphlet will be published in May 2023 with Broken Sleep. I am writing collaboratively with Dr Charley Barnes on a number of projects which we hope will be published soon. I am running my first workshop in May and am looking forward to working on some sculpture based projects in the future.

Q: Anything else you would like to share with us?

A: I would like to say thank you for enabling me to find something I that has given me such a focus over the past two years. Without Julie and City Lit I would not have discovered the world of poetry.
