This course will prepare you to start a career in Web Design. You will learn three essential coding languages HTML5,CSS and JavaScript and create a web site with a responsive layout and interactive features. This course will prepare you to begin a career in tech, update web sites and content management systems and collaborate more effectively with web developers.

Break weeks: 16th, 23rd and 30th December 2024 and 10th and 17th February 2025.

What is the course about?

HTML, CSS and JavaScript form the foundation for all content displayed on the web so if you’re looking for work in this sector these languages are a must. This web design course focuses on some of the leading front-end web technologies and is designed to help you make practical use of HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

Participants who will attend the full course will receive a City Lit certificate of attendance electronically for their CV or CPD records. The certificate will show your name, course title and dates of the course you have attended.

You can choose to attend this course either live online or in person.
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

Learn to write HTML
Add and format text and images
Link to pages and external web sites
Use HTML 5 structural elements for layout
Code HTML forms

Learn to write CSS
Change fonts, set text and background colours
Control spacing using margins and padding
Create column based layouts
Create responsive web pages

Learn to write JavaScript
Introduction - history and different versions, etc.
Variables - their type and scope.
Operators and their usage
Debugging – console output and console methods, breakpoints, etc.
Naming conventions used in JavaScript.
Writing scripts - internal vs external and the defer attribute.
Simple input/output using prompt() and alert() methods
Math object and mathematical methods
Validating user input and regular expressions
Displaying data in HTML elements
Modifying CSS
The Document Object Model (DOM) – structure and manipulation
Arrays – usage and methods
Iterating over data and controlling user input
Writing functions and improving code structure
Reacting to user input and handling events
Setting up timers and user interaction.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Use HTML to format content and structure a web page.
Write CSS to change the appearance of HTML elements and create modern, responsive web pages.
Add interactivity to web pages using JavaScript.
Create a small web site incorporating HTML, CSS and JavaScripting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have good general computing skills. You should be able to type 25 words per minute, create, save, download and manage files. You should be able to use a simple text editor or word processor.

You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer. Presentations will be made using computers, whiteboard and overhead screens. Step by step instruction / demonstration and hands on exercises to practice HTML, CSS and JavaScript syntax which will help you grasp all concepts. You will get the most from this course if you complete some projects outside of class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. Just pen and paper.

George Stickney

George graduated with a degree in Art,Design and Media and soon after became interested in the burgeoning web design industry. He started learning HTML and associated web design skills and later worked for design agencies and as a freelance designer on a variety of projects ranging from large corporations to small businesses. After dipping his toe into the teaching pool, George found he really enjoyed sharing his skills with others and helping them to achieve their goals and has been teaching for Visual Arts at City Lit since 2012. The thing he enjoys most about teaching at City Lit is the wide range of interesting people he meets at work.
