What is the course about?

The course aims to build on the language and skills that you have acquired in the previous three years and to extend your range of vocabulary and communicative competence. It also aims to consolidate your reading and writing of Chinese characters.

What will we cover?

Topics: The home; employment; health; travelling information and lost property.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Describe your home.
-Talk about your job.
-Describe your symptoms at the doctor's.
-Discuss travelling information.
-Report lost property.
-Recognise 130 new characters.
-Increase ability in using active vocabulary in both spoken and written forms.
-Use more complex sentence patterns within spoken and written forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you have completed Chinese 3 lower: module 2 or have an equivalent intermediate level of Chinese. A working knowledge of 400-500 characters would be an advantage.

You will need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, reading timetables). It is essential that you have some knowledge of basic (such as nouns and verbs) and more intermediate grammar terminology.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Materials used in class are provided by the tutor. You will not be working with a particular textbook. However, you can purchase the following course book for self-study: Chinese in Steps. (3)
This book can be bought in: Grant and Cutler - www.grantandcutler.com (020 7734 2012).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Chinese 3 upper: module 1 in September.
