This unique part-time course is for Sensory Equipment Officers, Technical Officers, Rehabilitation Officers and those employed in sensory teams who work with deaf service users in the community, helping them to live independent lives. The course is 20 days in total structured in ten lecture blocks each of 2 days, spread over 14 months.
Successful completion of the course leads to achieving a City Lit Certificate in Rehabilitation Work with Deaf People. The course is internally verified and not validated by an external exam board.
This course will be delivered at City Lit in London and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion.
What will we cover?
You will acquire knowledge and skills to enhance the way you support deaf and hard of hearing people. You will gain a broad understanding of a wide range of aspects and issues around deafness and deaf people that you can apply in your professional role.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Demonstrate knowledge of:
How hearing works and the different causes of deafness
Audiograms and hearing tests
The psychological and social effects of acquired deafness
Deaf culture and community
Deaf awareness
Language and communication
Hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive equipment
Counselling skills
Assessment.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No formal academic qualifications are required, but students will be expected to work at level 4 (equivalent to first year undergraduate study).
You will need to be able to:
Express yourself clearly and fluently in writing using accurate grammar and spelling.
Express yourself clearly and fluently in group discussions.
Research, read, comprehend and analyse text from a variety of sources.
After we receive your application form, the course co-ordinator will contact you to arrange an informal interview on Zoom. This is to make sure the course is right for you and that you understand the commitments of the course; you can also discuss any access requirements.
Before acceptance on the course, we will ask you to complete a written English assessment.
Any work submitted to gain entry onto a course, including an application form and assessment, needs to be the student’s own work. Any work suspected to be produced by generative AI tools will not be considered.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
We use lectures, demonstration, observation, group work, pair work, individual work, handouts, practical tests, role plays. There will be written assignments to be completed between the lecture blocks and some practical assignments during class time.
In addition to the taught learning hours, there is also a requirement to complete a minimum of 2 days of observations shadowing another Technical/Rehabilitation Officer and 1 day shadowing an audiologist. This can be spread out over the duration of the course to suit the student and will need to be arranged by the student themselves.
The course uses Google Classroom, a Virtual Learning Environment. Resources, discussion and news forums will all be available on this site. Your assignments will be submitted on this site.

Travel costs relating to the course and 3 days of shadowing (to be arranged by student).

Those students requiring a BSL interpreter or a STTR will need to have funding for this through their own Access to Work. Please liaise with the course co-ordinator who may be able to facilitate booking the support staff.
Lorraine’s career working with deaf people spans more than 35 years. Following her training at City Lit, she became a hearing therapist and lipreading teacher within an NHS audiology department. She subsequently worked with deaf children in schools, supporting them with their language development. Lorraine joined City Lit in 2008 to manage the Acquired Hearing Loss programme and has since developed many initiatives, such as Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss courses for armed Forces personnel and veterans, as well as training for Social Services staff to support deaf people. Lorraine enjoys teaching all the varied topics about deafness. She is a passionate champion of the benefits of lipreading classes and has spoken about the issues on BBC Radio 4 and at the House of Commons. She is currently training more lipreading teachers from across the U.K. Lorraine has a B.A. (Hons) in French and Russian.

Emma has been teaching for more than 25 years. At City Lit she teaches Level 3 and Level 4 in BSL, and has previously taught BSL Level 1 and 2. She has also delivered National Curriculum BSL to Deaf children from nursery age to year 6 at Blanche Nevile School in North London. She is chair of the Association of British Sign Language Teachers and Assessors (ABSLTA). She established the ‘BSL News’ Facebook group, currently with nearly 5,000 followers! Emma has taught BSL, from Introduction to Level 4 at a range of settings and organisations, including: Chicken Shed Theatre, Blanche Nevile School and City Lit. In 2018, Emma was chosen by Signature as their ‘Excellent Teacher’ in their Annual Awards! She was also nominated as one of the top teachers working in Haringey Education Authority in 2016. Emma was the staff representative on the board of Governors at Blanche Nevile School. Emma has one Deaf and one hearing sister and has links to other Deaf organisations through her parent. Her mother, Winifred Tumim was chair of the board of trustees of RNID (now Action on Hearing Loss) and CACDP (previous name for Signature) during the 1980s and 1990s.
