What is the course about?

To expand your skillset as an actor by mastering regional accents, including London; West Yorkshire; Liverpool and Bristol. The study of other accents can be negotiated with the tutor.

What will we cover?

The breakdown of the sounds of individual accents using texts and tutor resources. Knowledge of phonetics is useful but not essential.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Break down any accent into its component parts for self-study
Significantly increase the range of accents you are able to tackle at short notice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need a keen interest in the subject, a healthy dose of patience and a willingness to try out strange and fascinating new speaking possibilities.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will take place in the college Exercises to explore physicalisation of the accent, and to compare your own and other accents. Each accent will be applied to relevant text. You are expected to devote some time each week to practising at home to reinforce the new accents you have learnt.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

Jonathan Mulquin

Jonathan trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and then completed an MA in Voice Studies at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He is in great demand as a voice teacher and coach at colleges across London including East 15, City Academy, London College of Music, London School of Dramatic Art, and St Mary’s University. His teaching style is based on the yoga voice work of Lynette Erving, bringing a strong connection between the body, the breath and the voice. He is passionate about the stagecraft of the voice, and likes to give technical tips and approaches to ensure the voice can be heard in any space. He also teaches accents, from RP and General American to West Country, Bristol, and Welsh.
