What is the course about?

This course offers a place to continue enjoying acting for pleasure. It is a natural follow-on to Acting for Fun, with new scripts and material each term. An ideal way to continue to explore and develop your skills.

What will we cover?

• Drama games and exercises
• Improvisation and character work
• Scene rehearsal.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Work collaboratively and confidently with others
• Present yourself confidently in the space
• Perform with truth and believability.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Confident beginners, those with a little experience and anyone wanting to enjoy acting without pressure.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In pairs, groups and individually

You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Comfortable clothing and soft shoes should be worn. Please bring a pencil and rubber for annotating scripts. You may also wish to bring a notebook and pen to these sessions.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You could consider any improvers level course. You may wish to consider a Stanislavski, or an improvisation course.

Laura Baggaley

Laura is an experienced theatre director, teacher and writer and has taught at City Lit since 2011. Laura has worked at a wide range of venues including the National Theatre, the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, Birmingham Rep, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, and Southwark Playhouse. She loves all types of plays, from new writing and devised theatre to Shakespeare and works in translation, and enjoys bringing scenes and characters to life with students in her classes. Laura studied English Literature as an undergraduate at Oxford University and went on to take an MA in Text and Performance Studies at King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She splits her time between teaching, writing, environmental work and directing theatre productions.
