What is the course about?

The course is designed for those adults who stammer wanting to experience the practical process of acting. It is ideal for total beginners or for those with a little experience. It is an opportunity to improve your overall confidence in yourself and in performing as you explore a range of acting exercises. Learning is through fun simple exercises that begin with theatre games and build towards scene work. An opportunity to develop your creative skills in a stammer friendly environment.

What will we cover?

Drama games and group exercises
Improvisation
Scene rehearsal
Scene performance to the class.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Work more openly with others
Communicate more successfully
Work confidently in the process of rehearsing a scene
Perform a short scene with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners and those with a little experience.
In order to get the most from the course you should be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Read and respond to text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

If you are new to us, you need to have some advice on the course suitability. Please mail speechtherapy@citylit.ac.uk to arrange this.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Your tutor will use a range of practical exercises including whole group and pair work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear soft shoes and comfortable clothing that you can move freely in the classroom. Scenes will be provided. Bring something to write with – pencil and notebook / paper.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Enrol onto Acting for Fun or Acting: beginners. You may also wish to speak to the speech therapy team about other courses for adults who stammer.

Laura Baggaley Tutor Website

Laura is an experienced theatre director, teacher and writer and has taught at City Lit since 2011. Laura has worked at a wide range of venues including the National Theatre, the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, Birmingham Rep, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, and Southwark Playhouse. She loves all types of plays, from new writing and devised theatre to Shakespeare and works in translation, and enjoys bringing scenes and characters to life with students in her classes. Laura studied English Literature as an undergraduate at Oxford University and went on to take an MA in Text and Performance Studies at King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She now splits her time between teaching and writing novels for young adults.
