Hitchcock's The Birds (1963), sees the director exploring a familiar theme: the 'romantic couple' tested by suspenseful events. But unlike his glossy 1950s hits, Hitchcock opts for muted visuals and performances in an unflinching examination of femininity under threat and masculine cruelty, framed by a dystopian revenge of nature narrative. Explore the master's last great film, scene by scene.

This course explores the transformative period of Russian history from 1860 to 1924, encompassing the autocratic rule of the Tsars, the revolutionary upheavals of 1905 and 1917, the chaos of the civil war, and the consolidation of the Bolshevik regime. Students will examine key events, figures, and ideologies that shaped modern Russia, delving into the complexities of political, social, and economic changes during this era.



Please note: this course includes much of the material covered in previous Russian Revolution courses at the City Lit. Moreover this course is taught at an introductory level. Tutor: Zoe Quinn.

Dans la lignée de Voltaire qui au XVIII siècle annonça la Révolution puis de Victor Hugo qui au XIX annonça la République, les écrivains Francais du XX siècle ne sont pas restés insensibles aux évènements de leur temps. Tous les ont commenté et beaucoup y ont participé. De l’entrée fracassante de Zola dans l’affaire Dreyfus avec son “J’accuse” suivie par le traumatisme de la 1 ere guerre mondiale véçu par Céline, Barbuse et Genevoix, l’engagement sur la question coloniale dans les années 30 avec Malraux, Gide et Duras, la résistance à l’occupation nazie des poètes Vercors, Éluard et Aragon, le conflit est-ouest avec la célèbre querelle de Sartre et de Camus, jusqu’aux année 60 et 70 ou l’engagement et la signature de pétitions deviendront la norme.







Le XX siècle restera celui de l’engagement des écrivains de des intellectuels. Ils nous a laissé quelques unes des plus belles pages de la littérature Francaise. Nous les découvrirons et les lirons ensemble.

The history of Western art cannot be understood without an understanding of the importance of Italian art. This short course, delivered in Italian, will introduce you to some of the major figures in the history of Italian art. The first module of 5 lessons will cover Medieval painting in Italy and each lesson will be devoted to a particular artist who is representative of their time. The course will be delivered online.
