What is the course about?
Mah Jong is a game for 3 or 4 players each playing individually. It is a game that requires skill, strategy and calculation but luck also plays a part so everyone can win. It is a very sociable game that can be played by different generations. It can be played at a more basic level without scoring which is very enjoyable but it becomes a much more interesting game when scoring and adding penalties. We will learn to play British Mah Jong Association rules..

- Learning the background of Mah Jong,
- Becoming familiar with the sets: tiles and racks.
- How to set up the game,
- How to make a Mah Jong,
- How to playa basic game and a goulash.
- How to score Become aware of some simple special hands.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Play a basic game of Mah Jong
- Know how to play a goulash
- Appreciate that there are special hands that can be played
- Understand the principles of scoring - the value of the tiles and doubling and how to “settle up” with other players
- Know how to find your way around the rule book (Know the game, Mah Jong British Association) which will be needed for reference especially with the scoring and special hands.
- You will also understand what you need to look for if you wish to purchase a Mah Jong set..
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a beginners course for those with little or no knowledge and experience of the game..
.How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Teaching will be done using slide presentation and interactive participation with the sets. We quickly move on to the playing the game.
There is no formal work outside the class - should you wish to review the rule book or play with others outside class times you are encouraged to do so.
.Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Mah Jong sets and racks will be provided.
Having a copy of the Book: Know the game Mah Jong ISBN 978-0-7136-8951-8 published by Bloomsbury Publishing will be extremely helpful. This is needed for reference when you play.
Paper and pencil /note book / phone app will be needed to write answers to the quizzes during teaching. Notes need not be taken if you have the rule book, as everything is in there.
