What is the course about?
Following on from the Introduction to Hieroglyphs, this course broadens and deepens your knowledge of Egyptian Hieroglyphs.
What will we cover?
Students will learn more about Egyptian Hieroglyphs, focusing mainly on verbs and learning to read more complex sentences.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read a passage from a well known literary Tale from ancient Egypt
- translate longer sentences and texts in hieroglyphs.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for students who have already completed the Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphs course, or have completed a similar introductory course of study. You should be able to confidently transliterate and use a dictionary to translate words in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and should understand the basic principles of reading Egyptian (how to identify direction of writing, handling honorific transposition etc). As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group activities. There is some walking and standing required in the galleries.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The class will combine some lecture with practical activities. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do some homework/consolidation work at home every week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor. It is not essential, but it may help your learning to purchase a copy of How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Mark Collier and Bill Manley (any edition). Please be aware that part of the course will take place in the galleries at the British Museum so it will involve walking from Covent Garden to the British Museum and standing for some time around the objects. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs: part 3.
Hugo Cook studied Egyptology at Oxford and Cambridge universities. He can read six ancient languages and has worked as an Egyptologist in galleries, TV documentaries, educational institutions, and publications. Recently he has been working on a major new museum in Egypt and is writing a new book on Egyptology for Macmillan Publishers. He develops online Egyptological content for over 90,000 followers. Nothing gives him more joy than discussing antiquity with interested students.
