What is the course about?

This course aims to improve your intermediate level competence in all skills so that you can communicate
more effectively and confidently with Arabic speakers.

What will we cover?

Topics: Health and happiness, the body parts, talking about illness, at the pharmacy, asking and giving advice, art and cinema, Arabic in Sudan and the writer Emile Habibi.
Grammar: Structures to give advice, past verbs, plurals, using had / might (qad) with past and present verbs, comparisons between past and future.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Talk about your health and well being
- Discuss Arabic art and cinema
- Learn about the Arabic spoken in Sudan
- Read and write longer texts and descriptions.
- Improve your speaking through using grammar structures correctly.
- Develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Arabic 3 lower: module 2, or studied Arabic for approximately 3 years recently or have developed an equivalent competence in the language. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc). It would also be useful if you had some knowledge of intermediate grammar terminology.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
