Bad Queens of England? Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of Angouleme

Eleanor failed to produce a son for Louis VII and urged her sons by Henry II to rebellion. Isabella abandoned her children by King John to start anew in France with her daughter’s fiancé. We consider their roles as queens.

What is the course about?

The careers of two medieval queens of England spanning the second half of the twelfth century and the early thirteenth.

What will we cover?

In setting out the lives of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of Angouleme, we consider the impact their actions had on their roles as queens of England. How much agency did they really have? Who is writing about these women? To what extent are they tarred with the actions of their husbands?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Briefly describe the marital history of Eleanor and Isabella.
• Discuss what were the constraints on, and expectations of, a medieval queen beyond the bearer of sons?
• Debate on whether or not these women displayed any political acumen beyond the domestic sphere.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge is required. However, a good standard of reading, writing and speaking English is essential.
An open mind and a willingness to engage respectfully in class discussion and debate.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a PowerPoint presentation and a seminar-style discussion of original sources (in translation) pertinent to the topic. You are invited to bring along/describe items you have read in newspapers/heard on radio/seen on TV that you think may be of interest to the group.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need only bring note-taking materials. All necessary reading materials will be provided in class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

HEH49 Royal Mistresses of England and France
Starting in September is a new cycle of English history courses. Please see the City Lit website.
