This is a great opportunity to learn sections of repertoire from a well-known classical ballet. These will be group or solo dances, including some mime sequences. As preparation, a condensed ballet class will be offered, focussing on technical aspects that will occur in our repertoire section. You should have attended regular ballet classes for at least 1 year and have good knowledge of classical ballet vocabulary.

What is the course about?

Classical ballet is at the heart of this course which offers both a ballet class and the opportunity to learn sections from a well-known classical ballet. The course will provide a relaxed and fun opportunity for learning allowing for a slow and careful look at the classical technique.

What will we cover?

Ballet class: some barre work and some centre work
Repertoire: group/solo dances, including some mime sections.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Use with increased confidence the essentials of classical ballet technique.
Learn a sequence of steps to music and dance it with a sense of performance.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for those who have some ballet experience (minimum three terms of beginner ballet). It is also suitable for those with more experience (those who have attended an improver course/ or have equivalent experience). The course is not suitable for students who have never done ballet before.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will include practical class work, discussion, observation and supportive feedback for individual and group awareness. Outside of the class you would be encouraged to practice privately, although we will recap previous work as we continue to learn more material.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Tights, leotard or clothing that does not restrict movement will allow your tutor to see your work more clearly. Ballet shoes either canvas or leather with elastics. Jock straps should be worn by men. Students to tie their hair back if it is long for their own saftey and comfort. No jewelry to be worn during class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Classical ballet: beginners, Classical ballet: improvers, Floor barre, Ballet at the barre or Ballet body conditioning. You can find all of these classes on our website along with many other dance styles.

Alexander Simpkins

Alex began teaching classical ballet in 2012 and has been at City Lit since 2017. His life in dance goes back much further, to 1980, when he took his very first steps in ballet, becoming instantly addicted. Having completed his dance training, he embarked on a 16 year stage career with various companies in the UK, Austria, Spain and Germany, performing in classical ballets, contemporary works and in musicals. He holds teaching qualifications from the Royal Academy of Dance and an MA in Dance Pedagogy from the Palucca University of Dresden. In Germany he taught classes at vocational and company level. Since returning to London, he has enjoyed connecting with dancers of all ages and abilities. Alongside City Lit, he teaches at London Studio Centre, Royal Academy of Dance, Gielgud Academy and Pineapple Dance Studios and also assists PACE classes for adults with Parkinson's. He loves passing on his knowlege of dance, acquired from many wonderful teachers, to anyone who is curious to learn about the art form. In addition to teaching ballet, he writes about it, contributing articles to the monthly magazine Dancing Times.
