What is the course about?

Taking the first steps to being able to translate the Bible from Hebrew with confidence, understanding what translations are unable to convey.

N.B. There will be no class when the session falls on a Jewish festival.

What will we cover?

The Hebrew letters, definite article, ‘and’, prepositions, perfect verb and word pair.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • read Hebrew letters

  • recognise some noun forms and perfect verbs

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s course and does not require prior knowledge of Hebrew. As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
If you have never studied grammar before, you may benefit from attending a Grammar for ancient languages: an introduction at the Citylit.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be expected to read and translate in class, working from the textbook and from the tutor’s worksheets. You will also be expected to do some exercises during the week to help commit the material studied to memory, to learn vocabulary each week and participate in class activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring writing material.
