What is the course about?

Learn how to experiment and combine a variety of textile elements to create tactile, sculptural brooches. In this
vibrant textiles workshop you will create a budding twig brooch with fabric remnants. You will learn how to stitch, bind and combine textile embellishments to natural twig forms. This workshop is in celebration of the oncoming Spring season and for the colour and vibrancy of life it brings.

What will we cover?

You will see and handle samples of textile and twig samples and brooches. After viewing practical demonstrations
from your tutor you will take part in practical workshops in both morning and afternoon sessions. You will create
fabric beads and tufts to represent buds and blossoms along small branching forms. You will learn how to transform fragments of fabrics into delicate embellishments through hand-sewing, wrapping, whipping and binding.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Learn how to create bud-like forms with a variety of textile materials
- Experiment with textiles to create different sculptural forms and colour combinations
- Make a series of bound twigs with threads, yarns and fabrics
- Create at least one finished piece of textile jewellery.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This informal workshop is suitable for all levels who have good hand dexterity. Remember to bring your reading
glasses if you require them to view close details.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be shown examples of textile elements and finished jewellery to handle. Your tutor will provide group and
individual re-cap of demonstrations as required throughout the day. You will have one-to-one guidance as needed.
You will also take away an illustrated handout and materials list to continue practice in your own time beyond the
workshop.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a selection of small fallen twigs form the ground. All other essential materials and sewing tools will be
provided. You are welcome to bring your own sewing kit, collection of cords, threads, knitting yarns and fabric
remnants, particularly from clothing that is no longer worn or any off-cuts from your own textile projects.
