What is the course about?
Building on Chess for Improvers (UBD14) from last term.
What will we cover?
How to study chess. Discussion of the great players and important openings. More advanced checkmates.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Play through a grandmaster game
- be completely conversant with chess notation
- have a better grip on strategy and tactics
- understand the chess clock
- have the confidence to join a chess club.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
For those who know how the pieces move and understand check, checkmate and stalemate and have reasonable experience of playing a full game. It will be especially suitable for those who have attended chess for improvers (UBD14).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Mainly through interactive discussion and with plenty of opportunity to practise.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All materials will be provided.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Join a chess club, buy suitable books and dvds, read the chess column in daily newspapers with confidence and play in chess tournaments.
