Chinese 5: module 1
For advanced learners ( Citylit advanced level) of Mandarin Chinese to improve their speaking, listening and command of the Chinese language at a higher level (equivalent to HSK-4). Suitable if you have studied Chinese part-time for at least 5-6 years/ full-time for more than two years and have been self-learning and using Chinese occasionally in life/work or if you have passed HSK level-3 or equivalent (1500 vocabulary items or more).Students should be able to read Chinese characters.

What is the course about?
This course is designed to improve students' command of speaking and listening, so half of the teaching time will be based on speaking, listening and prepared presentations.
The teaching materials will be adjusted by the teacher to cater for students’ abilities and needs.
What will we cover?
Topics: You will cover a variety of topics which reflect the interests of the group (this will be discussed and negotiated in the first session).

- Improve your listening and reading Chinese characters
- Consolidate advanced grammatical structures.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have completed Chinese 4 or 5, or studied Chinese for approximately 6-7 years recently or have developed an equivalent competence in the language. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities. It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work,
group work, role plays, student presentations and listening activities. All the activities will be guided by the teacher and students will be corrected by the teacher during these activities.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

This course is based on the tutor’s own material. Your tutor might recommend a reference book for your own self-study.
