What is the course about?

The course is an immersive experience designed to explore the traditional art of Chinese fan writing, which combines the elegance of calligraphy with the poetic beauty of the Chinese language. Participants will engage with the historical and cultural background of fan writing, learn the basic strokes of Chinese calligraphy, and practice writing Chinese characters and simple poems on fans. This art form offers a unique window into Chinese aesthetics, making it a perfect medium for artistic expression and cultural appreciation.

What will we cover?

• Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy: History, styles, and cultural significance.
• Basic Strokes: Learning the fundamental strokes and brush techniques essential for Chinese writing.
• Calligraphy writing: Overview of the materials used in fan writing, including brushes, ink, and fan types. Students will be able to practice calligraphy of some basic Chinese characters.
• History of Chinese Fans: Materials, styles, and what are the things usually being put on the fans.
• Chinese Poetry: Introduction to classic Chinese poems, their meanings, and how to write them artistically on fans.
• Writing on Fans: Techniques for writing on the curved surface of a fan, layout planning, and balancing visual elements.
• Practice Session: Guided practice, with personalized feedback to help improve technique and artistic expression.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Open to all levels, from beginner to intermediate Chinese learners. No prior experience in calligraphy is necessary.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
