What is the course about?

This course delves into contemporary experimental filmmaking through a mix of theoretical study and hands-on exploration. By working with animation, chroma key compositing, projection mapping, sound recording, and both analogue (Super 8mm) and digital image capture methods, participants will experiment with unconventional approaches to film.

You will engage with the history and evolution of experimental film aesthetics while discovering new ways to integrate interdisciplinary elements into your work. The course encourages boundary-pushing creativity, helping you to develop and contextualize your practice within a wider artistic landscape. The final session will include an opportunity to showcase your work at an end-of-course screening.

What will we cover?

  • Experimental film practice in historical and contemporary contexts
  • Camerawork and sound recording, including the use of MIDI controllers
  • Animation, green screen techniques, and live streaming
  • Working with analogue Super 8 film
  • Editing and special effects using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
  • Projection mapping and installation techniques
  • Cross-disciplinary approaches: integrating performance, theatre, puppetry, and sound
  • Developing a personal experimental film project
  • Final presentation and screening

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to beginners with a strong commitment to exploration, as well as artists from various disciplines who want to expand their practice into experimental film. You should be open to collaboration, discussion, research, and developing projects both in and outside of class. A basic knowledge of computers (saving/retrieving files) is required, as we will be working on Apple Mac computers. You should be comfortable following instructions, participating in group discussions, and handling simple measurements and calculations.

You'll need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will include:

  • Demonstrations, workshops, and exercises
  • Short lectures and artist talks
  • Individual and group guidance
  • Group presentations and critiques

This course balances technical skills with conceptual exploration. Developing projects outside of class is encouraged, and resources will be available via Google Classroom and a dedicated blog: City Lit expanded experimental film
