What is the course about?

This short course introduces you to how artists work with found books using collage and mixed media to create new meanings and interpretations. You will explore and experiment with different techniques through a series of practical exercises, to create a complete piece or a group of 'book art'.

What will we cover?

We will look at ideas around form, space, scale and juxtaposition whilst working with assemblage, collage and decollage, working with found imagery and objects alongside your own mark-making.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Respond to the work of mixed-media artists
- Create new and personal work using a variety of mixed-media techniques and personal imagery
- Incorporate a more explorative, open-minded and original approach to your own artistic practice
- Have gained confidence to progress to further study and make an informed decision when choosing a higher level mixed media course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for both beginners and those with previous experience looking to experiment with new techniques. Bring an open mind and sense of adventure.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Presentations, demonstrations, group discussion and individual tuition. You will work individually and in groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided. Advice on bringing in your own materials will be given at the start of the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This short course may inspire you to develop your work in this area by enrolling onto 'Contemporary collage projects' or 'Collage and mixed media' courses.

Looking at personal experiences for inspiration, Ruth has been making sculptures inspired by her family history and professions. Ruth’s teaching aims to ignite students’ own personal expression, through diverse set projects, expressive materials used, and techniques taught. On-going encouragement of students’ strengths, enables confidence and self belief to develop. Ruth has exhibited extensively, and has her work in several Art Collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, and The Crafts Council, London.
