Colour mixing studio: two-day painting project

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of working in acrylics with a focus on how to get the best material effects. This will include mediums that can be added to acrylic paint to alter the flow and the consistency.

What will we cover?

We will cover a variety of both traditional and experimental techniques for applying paint to paper. We will explore ways of developing a picture with opaque impasto paint then transparent glazes before exploring mediums that can be added to the paint to alter its consistency and behavior.
We will explore painting in layers, priming surfaces and painting over textured surfaces. You will put your new skills to use by painting from still life subject matter. You will also be guided in making simple use of light and dark to help bring depth and form to your paintings.

- Use a range of painting techniques such as impasto, scumble and glaze.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use paint to describe the basics of tonal structure
- explore composition in painting
- mix colours using basic colour theory
- use a range of painting techniques such as 'impasto', 'scumble' and 'glaze'
- identify the work of artists and other practitioners.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners. Some drawing experience is helpful but not essential.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical work, individual and group tutoring, group discussion, demonstrations, visual presentations and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic paints and brushes required for the course are provided,
However it will be beneficial to bring with you the following materials:
1. A palette knife
2. A set of your own preferred brushes.
3. Wear old clothes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Painting 1, which prepares you for the technical approaches to painting.
For maximum benefit, we recommend you do both 'Painting 1' and 'Painting 2' or both modules in our Saturday school, 'Complete painting course part 1: beginners' followed by 'Complete painting course part 2: intermediate'.

There are a number of other next level painting courses that would be ideal progression routes such as 'Ways into abstract painting', 'Painting and the creative imagination', 'Oil painting for beginners' or 'Painting from plants and flowers'.
