What is the course about?

To improve spoken communication and interpersonal skills face to face and online.
To build confidence in your voice and message.
To develop personal effectiveness when speaking in meetings and interviews.

What will we cover?

Developing the skills of rapport through body language and voice.
Speaking up for yourself; presenting yourself with confidence.
Developing a presence as a communicator; engaging your listeners.
Influencing; building trust; overcoming objections.
Sensitive listening. Responding to criticism. Meeting skills.

Build a positive relationship through rapport.
Be aware of how body language enhances self-presentation.
Develop vocal energy.
Speak up for yourself with confidence.
Recognise barriers to communication; listen sensitively.
Handle negative criticism about performance.
Put your point across effectively at a meeting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students whose first language is not English need to be fully competent in speaking and listening, reading and writing in English.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will comprise talks, discussion, simulations, role play and observation, with opportunity for group feedback and evaluation. This is an online course, taught via live interactive sessions on Zoom, supported by a Google Classroom. For more information, see Online Learning at City Lit.
