This short course introduces you to how contemporary artists use collage and mixed media and how you can explore and experiment with different techniques through a series of practical exercises, to create complete pieces of work or studies that can be used for further development.
What will we cover?
- Identify some contemporary artists working with collage and the techniques used - Create work using a variety of collage techniques - Create mixed media work - Incorporate a more explorative, open-minded approach to your own artistic practice.

- Understand and make use of form, space, scale - Understand and make use of juxtaposition - Make work using assemblage, collage and decollage - Make work using found imagery and objects alongside your own mark-making.

The course is suitable for beginners and artists looking to experiment with new techniques. Bring an open mind and sense of adventure.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Presentations, demonstrations, group discussion and individual tuition. You will work individually and in groups. Come with an open mind and a willingness to experiment and to collaborate with others.

All basic materials will be provided - your tutor will advise you on what other mixed-media materials to bring in with you. This will include: newspapers, magazines, unusual papers and materials, found objects etc.

Jera is a visual artist and creative educator who has worked in community and educational settings for the last 20 years. She has a BA, PGCE and MA in Fine Art. She has also worked in creative management roles including Head of Richmond Art School, Program Leader HND Fine Art, course leader and tutor on a range of Foundation Art and Design diplomas. Her art practice is mixed media based, working with found materials, collating and responding to images, enviroments and objects through assemblage, collage, installation and drawing and painting interventions. As part of her practice she develops projects and co-creates work with different communities for public art commissions. As a neurodiverse artist she is passionate about inclusive teaching practices and alternative drawing approaches.
