What is the course about?
We will look at the history, archaeology, architecture, religion, inventions, and culture of the fascinating Sumer civilisation, which existed between 5,500 BCE and 1475 BCE. From the genius of cuneiform to the grandeur of ziggurats, we will explore what makes this civilisation so important to world history and so enduring in people’s interest. In addition, also look at the Akkadians, a closely linked great civilisation of Mesopotamia.
We will also look at key objects in the British Museum, such as the Standard of Ur, to understand how to ‘read’ Sumerian artefacts in any museum you visit.
