This short fast paced course is an excellent taster course for wishing to enter the world of film making. What will we cover?
- Framing your shot, camera angles and movement and their uses. - Recording image and sound with an HD camera - Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro; A basic introduction to the software and to some editing techniques. - Exporting your final film for publishing online.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand the importance of scripting and storyboarding - Understand the uses of different framing and camera movement. - Understand the HD camera settings to use to record images and sound. - Use basic editing techniques in Adobe Premiere Pro to edit a short film - Be able to export your movie using the appropriate codec.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a beginners’ course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including online workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks, notes and resources. You will be sent an email with the necessary information and will need to login into your Google classroom before each sessions starts.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The latest professional software and equipment is available for you in class throughout the course. It would be good for you to bring a portable hard drive for storing and saving your work.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can develop your skills further on our Narrative film making, Experimental film making and Start filming and compositing with green screen. You can also develop your editing skills on any of our many editing courses in Premiere Pro and Da Vinci Resolve.
David Kline is a produced feature film screenwriter and award winning short filmmaker. He co-wrote the feature film 'Housejackers (2025) produced by Northern Ireland Screen. His career in film started with supporting actor and writer Laurence Fishburne with a screen adaptation of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist for Warner Brothers which was optioned. David later worked as script reader for several UK film agencies including Scottish Screen and Northern Ireland Screen. David has written and produced many short films, including, 'Game Over,' a co-write with Director Adam Jenkins. The film won the Film and Media Insurance short film competition 2019 and won the horror / suspense category at the Ealing Film Festival 2020. It received official selections for the LA Shorts International Film Festival 2018 and London Short Film Festival 2019. David also wrote, produced and directed, 'On the edge,' which won Best Drama (Diamond award) at the European Independent Film Awards summer 2018 and 'Two for One,' winner of the Imaginary Mind film contest 2023.
Lyndon began his film career working as a runner on several short films and features whilst writing for his own films. Following this, he wrote, produced and directed three successful short films in quick succession between 2003 and 2006. Since then Lyndon has been developing a number of feature films for his production company while working as a filmmaker, with his most recent short film The Verity featuring in a number of international film festivals. For over eighteen years Lyndon has been running a wide range of practical film courses aimed at beginners and professionals alike. His teaching style is very practical, “I try to make them as enjoyable as possible and hopefully the first thing the students would want to do after the course is make another film…”
