What is the course about?
You will look at psychology from a cross cultural perspective and how culture impacts on individuals and groups. The course aims to facilitate greater awareness of cultural differences and how to work with such differences.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Ecological environment and culture, religion, kinship, family, marriage, sex, childbirth, marriage, mental health and adjustment to living in different cultures.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Describe a range of cultural differences
Identify at least 3 ways that culture impacts on individuals and groups
Describe 1 or 2 ways that differences manifests in a variety of settings including mental health and counselling.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No particular skills required other than an interest in the role of culture. Would be useful for people who work in a multicultural setting.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Lecture input, debates, small group work. No formal work outside class required, but reading may be recommended.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. Pen and paper may be useful if you want to make notes.
