Cultureplex Ciné-Club: women directors and their wonderlands

Come and join us at the Cultureplex Ciné-Club: Women directors and their Wonderlands, where you will have the opportunity to view and discuss the work of innovative female filmmakers whose work generates dazzling visions of alternative modes of living and spectatorship. A development from our existing Cultureplex Ciné-Club courses and taking its cue from the famous Parisian Ciné-club set up by the celebrated critic and writer, André Bazin, this incarnation of the film club will allow for the viewing of a different film each week, followed by detailed discussion and debate. The film will be introduced, and placed in both its cinematic, cultural and historic context. In sharing our viewing in City Lit’s premier screening room, the Cultureplex, we will approximate the experience of watching film in the cinema, one that is intense and fully focussed in a way that other modes of viewing often are not. After the screening we will devote the rest of the class to a collective exploration of the film, led by the tutor, but involving everyone in a participatory discussion that will allow all to express their responses, their views, their thoughts on the film screened.

What is the course about?

Across six weeks we will view films on this film studies course that are not simply directed by women, but which transformed visual culture through their distinctly feminine gaze. Each session will begin with a short introduction to the film and be followed by larger group discussions about the central themes.

What will we cover?

The course will view, explore and discuss films by a number of significant women filmmakers, including the following titles:

- The Daises, Vera Chytilovám (1966, Czecoslavakia)
- Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Chantal Ackerman (1975, Belgium/France)
- Vagabond, Agnes Varda (1985, France)
- Daughters of the Dust, Julie Dash (1991, USA)
- A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Ana Lily Amirpour (2014, USA/Iran)
- Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma (2020, France)

Please note that these titles may be subject to change.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Appreciate a diverse selection of films by women from around the world.
• Understand the important contribution that women filmmakers have made and continue to make to the global film industry.
• Position the work of women filmmakers within the social, political, and cultural contexts of different national cinemas and film industries
• Explore and understand the discourses that shape and reshape film canons and film histories.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is an introduction course and as such does not presuppose any prior expertise in film history or film analysis. The skills required to explore the topics and the films will be discussed in class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will involve an informal introduction using PowerPoint slides. The film screened will be the subject of discussion and analysis. Reading relevant to the course will be made available via Google classroom. All powerpoint presentations will be uploaded to Google Classroom after the weekly session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You do not need to bring anything but a notepad or digital device for notetaking may be useful. Where possible links to online reading resources will be made available.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
