The course is ideal for those wishing to explore and develop a more diverse range of approaches in their watercolour painting. Responding through observation and to secondary sourced imagery, you will expand the possibilities to control and manipulate this water-based medium. Through exploring brush work, grounds and colour application you will develop your confidence to discover new pathways of process in planning watercolour painting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Ideal for those with some basic experience watercolour using as a medium and wish to develop their painting skills further or completed one of our beginner courses e.g. Introduction to Watercolour Painting. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
• Studio-based practical tasks. • Tutor demonstrations • One to one guidance • Group discussion

Anne-Marie studied Fine Art at Epsom School of Art & Design and Advanced Printmaking at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design. She has been working with printmaking, drawing, watercolour and mixed media since 1976 and has been involved in art education since 1987 at City Lit College of Adult Education, Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design, Bath Spa University School of Art & Design, Norwich School of Art & Design, Havering college of Further & Higher Education, V & A Museum Education department (printmaking workshops,) Morley College of Adult Education. Anne-Marie has exhibited nationally including the Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Battersea Arts Centre and internationally at Brooklyn Art Library USA, RAMOMA (Museum of Modern Art Nairobi Kenya,). Publications: Mandy Bonnell & Stephen Mumberson ‘Printmaking on a Budget’; Jane Stobbard ‘Drawing Matters’; Jackie Newell & Dee Whittington ‘Monoprinting’ Teaching forms an integral part of Anne-Marie’s art practice with both often acting as a stimulus for the other.
Jack Duplock After receiving a postgraduate diploma in painting from Royal Academy School of Art. Jack has taught at various institutions including UCA, teaching learners from diverse backgrounds and ages on subjects such as observational drawing, painting and research methods. Over the past 20 years, alongside his teaching, Jack has built an established art practice exhibiting both in the UK and internationally, including at the Agency Gallery London, Durden and Ray Los Angeles and Kunstlaboratorium Vestfossen, Norway. His work has been included in New Contemporaries and John Moore painting prize. His work is in various private collections. Jack works primarily using watercolour, acrylic paint, pencil and pen and ink. Using photographs, both personal and found imagery. A recent body of work explored abstraction, figure and landscape inspired by the strange light and visceral folk history experienced during a residency in North Iceland. In his teaching, Jack delights in helping students follow their curiosity to develop new skills and perspectives in drawing and painting.

Sisetta studied at the Florence Fine Arts Academy, earning a first-class degree as a Master Printmaker. In 2011, she moved to London, developing her printmaking practice while teaching workshops for adults of all abilities in various communities. She teaches Botanical Drawing, Watercolour, Advanced Life Drawing, and Printmaking, inspiring students to expand their skills and explore innovative approaches. She promotes art as a global language, celebrating diverse artistic traditions. Sisetta’s work is exhibited internationally and held in public collections, including Italy and Morocco’s National Collections, the V&A, and the Museum of Graphic Arts in Pisa.

After receiving a BFA degree from Kansas State University, Rebecca moved to New York and studied at the New York Studio School. There, she studied with a vast assortment of New York artists, many with ties to the abstract expressionist movement. The Studio School selected her as an exchangee student to study at the Slade School of Art in London for one year. Returning to New York, she received her MFA from Parsons School of Design. She has been teaching in London for over 20 years and created numerous courses, based on specific exhibitions and the permanent collection, at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Since 2010 she has been teaching at City Lit with courses including Life Drawing, Life Painting, Painting 2, Ways into Abstract Painting and many Watercolour courses. She has a background in figurative work, which has included observation, memory, and a love for tone and colour. More recent work is rooted in observation, yet more abstract in appearance, focusing on process and largely done using watercolour.

Develop a fluency with brush work and layering of colour to develop compositional possibilities.• Setting up a composition by developing underpainting techniques to describe form.<br/>• Exploring and experimenting with layering techniques to construct an image. <br/>• An in-depth focus on brush work and other ways to create textural marks.<br/>• Advanced colour mixing, including the difference between opaque and transparent pigments. <br/>• Exploring and discussing historical and contemporary context for artists who use watercolour approaches in their practice.• Combine different brush strokes and washes to create dynamic compositions.<br/>• Utilise a more in-depth set of approaches using the medium of watercolour.<br/>• Develop layering colour to describe light and depth.<br/>• Recognise the approaches of selected artists who utilise a diverse approaches watercolour methods within their practice.You may wish to follow on with ‘Contemporary Watercolour Painting Projects,’ one of the themed courses in watercolour or painting or courses in other media on the general programme. You may also wish to support your watercolour practices with courses from our drawing programmes.Basic materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including watercolour paint, brushes and paper appropriate for the medium.
