To develop your directors’ toolkit whilst working on a range of plays. The focus is on selecting your own material and developing your confidence through practical experience, where appropriate.
What will we cover?
This course will expand your knowledge of plays from the past to present, from Shakespeare to Chekhov. We will continue to examine the rehearsal process in some detail and you will get a chance to direct fellow students and volunteer actors.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
-direct actors in a scene. -Adapt your style to suit different playwrights and texts, from Classical to contemporary. -Identify your style and director’s voice.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is ideal if you have completed Directing beginners. It is also appropriate for those experienced in acting or those who have a knowledge of plays, who wish to direct. In order to get the most from the course you will be able to: Speak English fluently. Communicate in group situations. Give and receive constructive feedback. Read and respond to a range of texts. Take course notes for your own use.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Group work and pair work depending on cast requirements of each play.
HEALTH CHECK You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Script extracts will be provided. You may wish to purchase your own copies of the texts that you are given to work on. You will have access to the Nick Hern book collection via drama online as part of your course.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Simon Bowen’s credits as a professional actor include appearances at The National Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and Bristol Old Vic, as well as dramas for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. He wrote ‘Free’ for the National Theatre, ‘From London With Love’ for BBC Radio 4, and ‘Whitebaby’ and ‘Waterloo’ for Paines Plough. He has also been a writer on attachment at Soho Theatre and the National Theatre Studio. Simon has directed plays and development workshops in a wide variety of settings including Soho Theatre, The Arcola, The Park Theatre, Theatre 503 and The Bunker Theatre. At City Lit, Simon currently teaches theatre-directing and play-reading.
