What is the course about?

This course is for intermediate level students with some drawing experience, who would like to explore experimental drawing techniques to develop their own ideas in drawing. Be inspired by experimental drawing processes and the work of contemporary artists. From initial sketches and additional research through to a series of final drawings, you will work from observation, personal research, and imagination.

What will we cover?

• Source material and development of subject matter e.g. sketchbook ideas, working from photographs and projections.
• Experimenting with image making materials i.e. drawing materials, mixing media and collage.
• Discussion of the visual language in drawing.
• Themes within contemporary drawing practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Draw with increased confidence using a variety of different methods.
• Use drawing as a means of recording, exploration, and self-expression.
• Use a sketchbook/photograph as a research tool for a drawing.
• Develop your initial visual ideas using a variety of drawing materials and processes.
• Make a sustained drawing or series of works.
• Make decisions about the development of your own work.
• Reflect on the work of artists working today and the influence on your own drawing practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course for students with drawing experience / completed our Drawing 1 course or an equivalent. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try things out and develop your work further.

You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Practical work in the studio.

Basic materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including drawing media and paper.

Chris Hough

Chris has taught at City Lit for over 25 years and is a former co-ordinator of the CityLit Fine Art Course , stepping down to concentrate on his painting practice and to teach more on the short course programme. He studied painting at Central St Martins and the Royal College of Art and has post graduate qualifications in art history and a teaching qualification from the Institute of Education and from University of Surrey. He has understaken fellowships, residencies and travelling scholarships in Chicago, Paris, Moscow Region and West of England and has an established art practice which encompasses, drawing, painting, projection and small scale model, making.
