Exploring the potential of ink and wash for sketching on location, recording ideas, and for creating studies for more sustained works. Learners will be introduced to a variety of application techniques in a supported but expansive setting, enabling them to hone skills and build confidence in this adaptable medium.
What will we cover?
• Working from direct observation • Using reference photographs and online images as source material • Pens, brushes and non-standard drawing tools • Wet into wet technique • Movement in washes • Papers and stretching paper • Mark making.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Identify suitable opportunities and subjects for pen and wash drawings • Demonstrate an understanding of papers and tools to use with washes • Selectively apply a range of ink and wash techniques.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels, however, some drawing experience would be helpful (e.g. on the course 'Drawing 1' or equivalent).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
• The session is studio based – you will work from direct observation. • Examples of techniques and materials will be shown, demonstrated and discussed. • Handouts and contextual images will be used. • A series of short practical activities will be set based around the techniques demonstrated. • These will be supported by one-to-one guidance and an informal review at the close of the session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course fee covers the basic materials such as cartridge paper and inks. If you have favourite drawing pens etc or would like to use specialist paper then please bring these with you.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Progress to Drawing 1 or 2, or Watercolour courses, or more advanced courses such as Extended Drawing for Artists and Makers.
Mario Lautier Vella is a cross-disciplinary, award-winning artist who began his art career at City Lit. After completing a number of short courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles, Mario went on to do the two-year City Lit Fine Art course before going back to university to gain his Masters degree. Mario regularly exhibits in the UK and abroad and his work can be found in private collections around the world. Mario has enjoyed teaching at City Lit since 2011. Jack Duplock After receiving a postgraduate diploma in painting from Royal Academy School of Art. Jack has taught at various institutions including UCA, teaching learners from diverse backgrounds and ages on subjects such as observational drawing, painting and research methods. Over the past 20 years, alongside his teaching, Jack has built an established art practice exhibiting both in the UK and internationally, including at the Agency Gallery London, Durden and Ray Los Angeles and Kunstlaboratorium Vestfossen, Norway. His work has been included in New Contemporaries and John Moore painting prize. His work is in various private collections. Jack works primarily using watercolour, acrylic paint, pencil and pen and ink. Using photographs, both personal and found imagery. A recent body of work explored abstraction, figure and landscape inspired by the strange light and visceral folk history experienced during a residency in North Iceland. In his teaching, Jack delights in helping students follow their curiosity to develop new skills and perspectives in drawing and painting.
