For beginners to learn the practical skills required to play drum kit in contemporary music, including stick technique, four-way coordination, listening and music reading. You will play acoustic and practice kits in class.

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of drum set playing - starting with set up of the drum kit, posture, stick grip and control, some starter rudiments and essential co-ordination exercises - hand to hand and hand to foot.

What will we cover?

- Stick control exercises, warm-ups and rudiments
- Introduction to drum notation
- Co-ordination on drumset: hand/hand, hand/foot
- Rudimentary exercises
- Essential grooves
- weekly practice of playing together.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate good posture and stick control
- Demonstrate a sound and varied practice routine
- Play some rudiments: paradiddle, double strokes
- Play a variety of grooves.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior experience required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

As much practical work as possible with practice pads. Some kit work where co-ordination exercises involve hand/foot techniques. Demonstrations and recorded examples, listening, playing along with the tutor and audio tracks.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring your own sticks (not expensive to acquire), a note pad and pen/pencil; all practice pads and kit are provided. Written materials (exercises and samples) will be provided by your tutor and available in the google classroom.

Matt Fisher

Known for his versatility, Matt Fisher is a sought-after drummer and percussionist based in London. Matt has performed and collaborated with some of the UK’s most prominent musicians such as Tina May, Jacqui Dankworth, Najma Akhtar, Nikki Illes, Steve Waterman, Anita Wardell and Christine Tobin. Working in a variety of styles from pop and rock, to jazz and orchestral, Matt has toured and performed around the world including India, USA, Morocco, Mexico and across Europe. Matt is endorsed by Kandu Percussion and Rohema drum sticks. As well as having a busy performing schedule, Matt is teacher of drum kit at St Paul’s School, Emanuel School, and is also an examiner for Trinity College London. Matt has contributed articles to the Modern Drummer Magazine (USA) and was a product reviewer for Rhythm Magazine (UK). Matt received a First Class Honours degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and completed his Masters degree in Jazz Performance at Trinity College of Music, London. Matt commenced teaching at City Lit in 2025.
