What is the course about?

This course will help you develop your communication skills in Dutch in a wide range of situations. You will learn the vocabulary and idioms you need to cope with more complex situations and discussions.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

You will discuss a number of issues in your social life, at home and at work; practise telling stories from your life and from the news; discuss current issues, giving your opinion and arguments for and against; talk about your experiences and ambitions in education and at work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use future & past tenses with confidence
- Express your opinion
- Express a wish
- Give advice
- Make a complaint.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at people who have successfully completed a Dutch course for 3-4 years. People may also have acquired conversational skills in the language by living in the Netherlands or Flanders for a longer time. This course is a mixed ability course.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on tutor's own materials and excerpts from a coursebook tbc.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Dutch upper intermediate. Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Francine van den Berg

Having finished my MA in Communication Sciences paired with foreign languages, I went straight into tourism, working for airlines, tourism operators and cruise ships. As a tour guide working within Europe, I have had the pleasure to meet and greet wonderful people from all over the world. Ditto when working as a Dutch, Italian and German interpreter/translator on board cruise ships. Languages are the keys to new cultures, and I love helping people to open new doors. I am currently doing an MA in Creative Writing next to my tutoring assignments, so who knows? I might also be teaching creative writing at some stage. I look forward to many hours of fun language lessons with Citylit students!
