English and Maths for deaf people: Getting started with English and Maths (pre-entry) - part 1

What is the course about?

This course is suitable if you have arrived in the UK from abroad and/or missed out on the education at school due to communication barriers. On this course, you will learn more vocabulary of English words and use them in reading and writing basic sentences. You will also will work with basic numbers, measures, shapes and use of data. It is a very practical course and the skills you learn can be applied to your every day life contexts. You will be introduced to google classroom basic functions. This course has no exams.

What will we cover?

We will use different topics which will help you to build up your vocabulary of English words. The topics will include work, sports, countries, languages, places in London etc. We will explain how to get started with reading and writing simple sentences which will include capital letters, full stops, exclamation and question marks. We will also explain how to work with basic numbers, measures, shapes and use of data.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- fill in basic forms with your details
- identify basic verbs and nouns in sentences
- discuss the news and ask and answer basic questions
- do spelling tests
- tell the meaning of words in the sentences
- construct a simple sentence with familiar words, capital letters and basic punctuation
-use whole numbers (0-10) e.g. count to 10 items, order and compare numbers 0 -10 etc.
-do basic calculations (add and subtract single digit numbers with totals to 10)
-use calendar, time and money in everyday life contexts
-use basic measurements (length, size, width and height) in everyday life contexts
-recognise and choose 2-D and 3-D shapes
-use basic data (e.g. lists) in find out simple information, sort and classify objects etc.
- use google classroom functions: join google classroom, post comments etc.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a deaf-only group with a tutor that is fluent in British Sign Language. Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and google classroom will also help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. You will be given homework on a regular basis and an opportunity for one to one tutorials with your tutor to discuss any individual learning needs that you have.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is recommended that you bring:
- appropriate stationary (e.g. pens, highlighter pens etc)
- Notebook
- A file to keep your work in.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

In order to complete this course successfully, you will be asked to do different tasks and tests. Also, your attendance and punctuality is expected to be at 85% or above. At the end of this course, your course tutor will review your overall learning progress including your attendance/punctuality and will advise you on what courses you can do next.
