What is the course about?

This course is suitable for you if wish to improve your knowledge of English tenses. You will learn the names of the different tenses, for what situations we use them and their structure form. You will be signposted to online sources of information and practical exercises which can be used to refine and revise your knowledge throughout the course and after the course has concluded. This course has no exams.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Your tutor will decide from a range of topics based on individual reading and writing skills:
You will learn about the different tenses and why we use them. You will also learn about the structure and form. These will be:
• The verb “to be” in all forms
• Irregular and regular verbs
• The Simple Tenses (simple past, simple present and simple future)
• The Perfect Tenses (past perfect, present perfect and future perfect using “have” and “had”)
• The Continuous Form – “ing”

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Modify the verb “be” for number, person and tense
• State the situations for which we use
• Use the simple present/past/future structure and form correctly
• Use the simple future with “will” (and other modal verbs) or “going to”
• State the situations for which we use the three simple tenses and demonstrate evidence of using structure and form correctly
• State the situations for which we use the perfect tenses and demonstrate evidence of using structure and form correctly.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course will be taught over 5 sessions:
18 April 2024, 2 May 2024, 16 May 2024, 13 June 2024, 27 June 2024;

You will be taught in a deaf-only group with a tutor that is fluent in British Sign Language. Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and google classroom will also help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will allow you to build up a folder of work. Between the sessions, you will be given tasks based learning activities and homework to do on your own and/or in collaboration with other students.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is recommended that you bring: appropriate stationary (e.g. pens, highlighter pens etc); a notebook; a file to keep your work in.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

In order to complete this course successfully, you will be asked to do different tasks and tests. Also, your attendance and punctuality is expected to be at 85% or above. At the end of this course, your course tutor will review your overall learning progress including your attendance/punctuality and will advise you on what courses you can do next.
