Entry 1 Reading and Writing

Do you want to improve your reading and writing skills in English for everyday use? On this course, you will practise your reading and writing skills, but also improve your speaking and listening. Covering different topics such as daily routine, transport, health and shopping, you will practise identifying and reading different texts, writing answers, and asking and answering basic questions in the present simple tense.

What is the course about?

You will practise your reading, writing but also speaking and listening skills. Each class will focus on a different topic such as life in the UK, daily routine, work, healthy living, jobs, food, going out and about, shopping, transport and different countries and nationalities.

What will we cover?

We will focus on:
• asking and answering basic questions in present simple
• talking and writing about simple everyday topics e.g. the home, family life, friends
• describing objects and pictures using simple adjectives
• practise describing location and time using common and basic prepositions such as on, at and in
• listening for simple details in short basic recordings
• writing short simple sentences about people and things using the present simple tense
• writing short simple notes, messages, emails and letter to family or friends
• writing clearly
• finding information in notices, simple adverts, forms and texts
• learning how to fill in simple forms on paper and online
• learning a lot of basic words and their correct spelling
• writing simple sentences using correct basic punctuation - capital letters, full stops and question marks
• practising saying the time confidently on analogue and digital clocks
• practising basic numeracy and mathematical functions including the use of money and calcuations.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• read and write the whole alphabet
• recognise the different sounds of English
• hear the different sounds within a word
• relate the sounds within words to letters
• use the sound-letter correspondence to improve your spelling
• recognise rhymes
• follow text from left to right and from top to bottom
• recognise signs and symbols
• use basic punctuation - capital letters, full stops and question marks - to full sentences
• count at least up to 100
• read prices on receipts and other important numbers
• describe the shapes of things
• make basic calculations e.g. when shopping or paying bills.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for speakers of other languages (ESOL) who have very basic or minimal literacy or language skills, and who need help with reading, writing whole words and short sentences in a supportive and comfortable environment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover basic rules and features of English to increase your confidence in literacy. You will work on your own and with other students. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually, so you know how to improve. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use digital skills sometimes to help you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You will need a pen and a notebook to keep your work in. Your teacher will give your materials and worksheets to work from. Other than that, just bring yourself and your enthusiasm to learn!
