What is the course about?

The course focuses on developing your ability to communicate in writing in a range of everyday contexts. You will learn how to plan, draft, and proofread different types of writing, improve sentence structure, and apply grammar rules. The course also helps you expand your vocabulary and organise your ideas clearly.

 

This course prepares you for the ESOL Skills for Life Entry 3 Writing exam, with the English Speaking Board (ESB). It will also boost your skills for work, education, and daily life in the UK

What will we cover?

You will practise Writing and if you pass your in-class assessments you will then prepare for the accredited exam which takes place a week after the course ends. Each class will focus on a certain topic such as life in the UK, different cultures, work, technology, health, and enjoyment.

The course will cover a variety of relevant and practical writing activities, including:

· Writing for everyday purposes such as completing forms, writing notes, message and emails

· Formal and informal writing - understanding tone and register, and writing letters and emails for different audiences

· Planning and structuring writing to organise ideas logically, using paragraphs and linking words

· Grammar and sentence structure – using correct verb tenses and sentence types (simple, compound, complex)

· Spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation - common spelling patterns and rules and using full stops, commas, question marks, and apostrophes

· Descriptive and narrative writing – writing about past experiences and describing people, places, and events

· Proofreading and editing to check for errors and improve clarity and accuracy

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Write clearly and effectively for a range of everyday and practical purposes

· Plan and organise writing using appropriate structure and layout

· Use a range of sentence types and grammatical structures accurately

· Apply correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation in written work

· Write formal and informal texts suited to different audiences and purposes

· Describe experiences, events, and opinions in writing

· Edit and proofread your own writing and other learners to improve accuracy and clarity

· Demonstrate readiness for the ESB ESOL Entry 3 Writing assessment and progress to Level 1

You will also improve your digital skills using:

· Google Classroom

· the internet

· Microsoft Word

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an Entry 3 course. This course is ideal for you if you can ask and answer questions about personal information, routines, likes and dislikes using the present simple and past simple tenses. You will need to attend regularly, and complete and pass all in class assignments to your tutor’s satisfaction to be entered for the exam.

 

IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT travel or take holidays during the course unless it is an emergency. Regular attendance is required to allow you to sit the exam.

 

The ESB Entry 3 ESOL Writing exam will be on Wednesday 8th July 2026.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on your discovering how to do and complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. You will work in pairs and small groups. Your tutor will work with you individually, so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

You will need to do homework every week and use Google Classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring:

· a pen

· a lined A4 paper notepad or notebook

· a folder for your work

Your tutor will give you worksheets, other materials and a code to join Google Classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course has three parts. You usually complete one part each term.

After this course, you can move on to the ESOL Level 1 Reading unit.
