What is the course about?

This is the Entry 3 ESOL Speaking and Listening unit of the course to give you confidence in communicating with others for everyday communication, work, and study. Through interactive activities, role-plays, and real-life scenarios, learners will build confidence in speaking clearly, listening actively, and participating in discussions. The course supports learners in developing the language and strategies needed to communicate effectively in a range of social and practical situations.

 

This course prepares you for the ESOL Skills for Life Entry 3 Speaking & Listening exam, with the English Speaking Board (ESB). It will also boost your skills for work, education, and daily life in the UK

What will we cover?

You will practise Speaking and Listening and if you pass your in-class assessments you will then prepare for the accredited exam which takes place a week after the course ends. Each class will focus on a certain topic such as life in the UK, different cultures, work, technology, health, and enjoyment. The course will cover a variety of practical and engaging activities, including:

· Speaking for everyday situations such as making requests, giving information, asking for clarification and describing people, places and experiences

· Developing your everyday conversations including asking and answering questions using different tenses

· Listening for gist and detail in announcements, instructions and conversations

· Participating in discussions, expressing opinions and preferences, agreeing, disagreeing, and turn-taking

· Developing pronunciation and fluency (stress, intonation and rhythm, speaking clearly and at a natural pace)

· Using formal and informal language for different situations

· Developing vocabulary

· Giving short talks and presentations with attention to use of linking words, conjunctions and structure

· Listening strategies to predict information and using situations and key words to aid understanding

· Understanding everyday conversations and short recordings

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Communicate effectively in familiar and some unfamiliar situations

· Take part in discussions, expressing opinions and responding appropriately

· Listen for and understand the main points and details in spoken English

· Use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures to speak clearly and accurately

· Demonstrate improved pronunciation, fluency, and confidence in speaking

· Adapt language and tone for different purposes and audiences

· Deliver a short talk or presentation on a familiar topic

· Demonstrate readiness for the ESB ESOL Entry 3 Speaking & Listening assessment and progress onto ESOL Entry 3 Writing

You will also improve your digital skills using:

· Google Classroom

· the internet

· Microsoft Word

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an Entry 3 course. This course is ideal for you if you can ask and answer questions about personal information, routines, likes and dislikes using the present simple and past simple tenses. You will need to attend regularly, and complete and pass all in class assignments to your tutor’s satisfaction to be entered for the exam.

 

IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT travel or take holidays during the course unless it is an emergency. Regular attendance is required to allow you to sit the exam.

 

The ESB Entry 3 ESOL Speaking & Listening exam will be on Monday 30th March 2026.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on your discovering how to do and complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. You will work in pairs and small groups. Your tutor will work with you individually, so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

You will need to do homework every week and use Google Classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring:

· a pen

· a lined A4 paper notepad or notebook

· a folder for your work

Your tutor will give you worksheets, other materials and a code to join Google Classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course has three parts, and you will normally complete each part over three terms.

After this course, you can move on to the Writing unit.
