This is an ideal course for any artist, illustrator or designer who wishes to explore the publication of independent work.
Zines (short for magazines) are low-cost, self-made and low-tech publications that offer an opportunity to be playful and creative and explore a variety of subject matter. Use just about any topic as a starting point and explore various approaches and techniques to bring your zine to life.
Along the way, learn about the culture and history of zines and use this as an opportunity to develop other creative projects.
What will we cover?
• Image creation – using analogue and digital media • Collage techniques • Typography – creation and editing • How to enjoy and use ‘mistakes’ to develop ideas • Page layout – of images and type • Format design • Booklet construction
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Identify approaches to zine making • Demonstrate creative approaches in image making • Explain low-fi technical processes in both construction and printing • Present a final zine related to a personal topic
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for beginners and ideal for all artists, designers and creatives. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience (all we ask is that you arrive with exciting ideas and/or imagery you wish to use).
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You may be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be delivered through:
Presentations
Demonstrations
Practical work
Individual and group tutoring
Group discussions
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
