What is the course about?
One of the most important subjects in philosophy is the subject of epistemology. Epistemology deals with questions of knowledge in all its various forms. This course specifically explores Immanuel Kant’s (1724 -1804) theory of knowledge.
What will we cover?
The course will cover Kant’s theory of knowledge which is philosophically important and interesting as it seeks to answer questions such as what we know; how we know, and what is the limit of knowledge? It also gives us insights into how the mind acquires knowledge. Kant’s epistemology is situated within the idealist tradition compared to the empiricist school of thought.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Kant is one of the foremost thinkers in Western philosophy and at the end of this course, you would have gained an understanding of what philosophers mean by epistemology, particularly an understanding of Kant’s theory of knowledge. You will also have gained an understanding of what makes Kant’s theory of knowledge revolutionary and unique.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You do not require prior knowledge of philosophy or epistemology, only enthusiasm, an open mind that is willing to listen and respond to views that you may not always agree with, and a thirst for knowledge. The course is designed both as an introductory and intermediate level as it guides you through various levels of Kantian epistemological thought.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught face-to-face in an interactive class which will include a mix of tutor explanation and time for discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no extra costs. You do not need to bring anything except some aids for taking notes and a ready and open mind.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
The same tutor will teach Exploring Kant: the concept of freedom, starting in February 2026 and Exploring Kant: on race and ethnicity, starting in June 2026.
