What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to bring to the forefront those, in British politics and society, who may have been confined to the fringes of history, simply been forgotten about, not fully understood or had their stories altered to fit a certain narrative.

What will we cover?

The good, the bad and the ugly.

We will not solely be focussing on those who have been remembered in a favourable light, and there will be plenty of scope to discuss if the person in question has made a positive or negative contribution to British society, and maybe even the world.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Have an expanded knowledge of key figures in British politics and society and decide if their contributions were for the better or worse of politics and society.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is introductory and everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge is necessary but a good grasp of English, an open mind, and a willingness to listen to different views are all that is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be delivered through a mixture of lecture and discussion, with student participation invited and encouraged. Optional extend your knowledge tasks can be set if required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs, but you may wish to bring a pen and paper, or digital equivalents, for making notes.

Gabriel Olumide Apata

Dr Gabriel O. Apata is a research scholar and academic tutor of many years standing. His undergraduate and post-graduate degrees were in philosophy, while his PhD was in cultural studies/sociology. His academic interests are therefore multi-disciplinary, and his areas of research cover Philosophy, Sociology, Aesthetics, Religion, Post-colonial Studies, African history and politics as well as Diaspora Studies. He has published many academic articles in leading journals on these various subjects as well as reviews of academic books. He is a co-editor of book reviews for the journal Theory, Culture and Society. Gabriel is very excited to start teaching at City Lit and welcomes everyone to his classes.
