What is the course about?

This course is a mix of practical printing and taught sessions, giving you a comprehensive grounding in producing portfolio and exhibition inkjet and giclee prints up to A2 size, to a highly professional standard. You will learn about colour correction, basic colour management, different premium paper types and inks, and how to get the most out of Photoshop and printer software. Over 4 sessions you will be given fantastic opportunities to experiment with printing your work on our top-of-the-range Epson Photo inkjet printers. Please bring a selection of your own images to your first class – either on memory stick or portable hard disc.These should be saved as unresized, high quality JPEGS or TIFFS.

What will we cover?

- Using Adobe Photoshop and non-destructive image techniques to achieve high-quality prints
- Colour-managing your workflow
- Test prints
- Black and white toned images
- Hands-on, practical experience of printing your work on different kinds of inkjet paper
- How to load and use profiles for specialist paper.
- Producing a set of prints on a selection of premium papers.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use Adobe Photoshop and basic image adjustment to achieve high-quality prints
- print your work on different kinds of inkjet paper using an inkjet printer
- change the settings on the printer software to match your paper, and upload profiles for specialist paper types
- take away a portfolio of inkjet prints on a selection of premium papers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for those who already have an understanding of the basics of digital printing and who want to improve the quality of their prints. A basic knowledge of Photoshop is useful but not essential. If you use Adobe Lightroom, many of the skills are transferable.

You will need to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mix of practical printing and taught sessions in a dedicated studio environment using Apple Mac computers, Epson printers and high-quality inkjet paper.
The course also uses Google Classroom (an online teaching resource) for you to share comments with your class, download course material and upload images for group crits. Google classroom login help.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a selection of your own images to your first class – either on memory stick or portable hard disc.These should be saved as unresized, high quality JPEGS or TIFFS.
Please note PC-formatted media can be read by Apple Macs but not written to.
We provide a limited amount of premium Epson and Hahnemuhle paper . If you want to print on other papers you will need to purchase these yourself.

Dominic Harris

Dominic Harris's studio is based in South East London. In 2004 he won the British Journal of Photography portfolio award and in 2011 won the London Photography Association bronze prize for portraiture in the show 'Let's Face It' and the SPS Prize award for most innovative print at the Royal Western Academy 'Open Photography' show. He has exhibited widely and has work in collections in Europe and America as well as a body of work in the National Media Museum collection. He has been teaching photography at City Lit for 20 years, and has previously been Head of Department for Photography and Digital Arts, and Head of School for Visual Arts at City Lit. He was also a trustee of Tate Members from 2007-2016.
