This is the second year of flute study. The course will keep you practising and playing with others. You will learn new techniques and tools for playing, as well as new repertoire.
What will we cover?
- continuation and development of all previous learning, i.e. tone, technique, articulation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato and posture - aural perception, improvisation, sight-reading, memorisation, musical interpretation - musical theory and style through a varied repertoire - solo and ensemble performance.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- play with better tone, tuning and expressive range - improve articulation, breath control and a more flexible embouchure - demonstrate an enhanced sense of rhythm, better sight reading and practice methods - improve your listening skills, improvising and memory skills - improve finger technique and scales - improve reading music notation and general musicianship - perform a range of repertoire and participate in ensemble pieces with greater confidence - play at approximately Grade 4 (ABRSM / Trinity) level by the end of the academic year.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have 1 to 2 years' playing experience and have reached a standard beyond Grade 2 (ABRSM / Trinity), i.e. be able to an F or G major scales and arpeggios across two octaves. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
-Demonstration and explanations by your tutor -Playing together in class -Group work in two to four parts -Playing individually -Listening to other students -Practising with a pianist and backing tracks -Listening to flute recordings -Class discussion -To make progress you will need to practise regularly between classes, ideally 20 minutes on at least 5 days a week Occasionally you will have small written assignments to complete outside of class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need to bring your own flute with cleaning accessories, a notebook and pencil. You will need to buy music for the course; advice will be given by your tutor. Most ensemble music will be provided.
Pam Pecko Smith is a UK-based freelance flutist, vocalist, and music educator who performs in an eclectic range of ensembles. She is a native of the Philadelphia area, where she earned a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, followed by intensive graduate studies at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, Hungary. In 2011 Pam founded The Lodore Trio, a chamber group comprising flute, viola, and piano. The trio’s first album CASCADE was released in 2018, featuring new music by Amanda Lee Falkenberg, and their second album RIVULETS was released in 2022. Pam is also a vocalist, and in 2017 she formed the vintage jazz group Honeysuckle Jazz, which specialises in songs from the 1920–40s. Pam has performed widely throughout the UK and internationally in genres spanning orchestral, folk, film music, world music, and jazz. A dedicated teacher of performing ensembles, she has served on music faculties in private and international schools in Hungary, Portugal, the US, England, Kenya, Turkey, and Poland. She is delighted to be teaching on the music staff at the City Lit.
