What is the course about?

This highly interactive course introduces you to the world of forensic science - what forensic science is, what role it plays, how the scene of crime is processed and the types of evidence. We will specifically look at the properties of hair, fibres, finger printing and footwear impressions. We will also investigate case studies, looking in detail at evidence; take photographs; and make casts. You will also be participating in group discussion, written exercises and activities relating to the topics oulined below.

• The crime scene
• Recoverable materials
• Fingerprints and other marks
• Footstep length by height.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Describe what forensic science is, understand of the history of forensic science and what forensic scientists do.
• Assess the types of evidence that can be found at a crime scene
• Identify properties of hair and different fibres
• Identify various marks
• Learn the method to calculate measurement.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course and suitable for anyone with an interest in learning the basics of forensic science. A willingness to engage in class activities and discussions from week to week is the only requirement.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using PowerPoint slides, group discussion work, class-based written exercises and practical activities. Please note that to help you get the most out of this topic, this will be a highly interactive course based on practical exercises rather than weekly lectures. Exercises take place in a safe and welcoming environment. Reading is optional but will help you to get the most out of your course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
