What is the course about?

This course encourages you to speak French more freely and confidently in a range of situations. Through regular practice, you will develop your listening skills, build confidence, and deepen your understanding of French in both personal and social contexts.

Activities include sharing personal experiences (e.g. talking about your life, interests, or opinions), taking part in everyday conversations (e.g. discussing work, lifestyle, or current issues), and listening to authentic spoken French such as interviews or short reports, before reacting and exchanging ideas with others.

What will we cover?

Topics covered
Learners will explore themes related to social media, false advertising, and making complaints, including writing and responding to online reviews.

Language focus
The course develops learners’ ability to agree and disagree and to express points of view using the indicative and the present subjunctive. Learners will practise forming sentences with double object pronouns and refine their ability to express opinions and reactions in more nuanced ways.

Cultural content
Cultural topics include the work and impact of artist Stromae, as well as an exploration of strikes in France, offering insight into social attitudes, protest culture, and current debates.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Share opinions using more complex sentence structures
(e.g. Je pense que la publicité en ligne est efficace, même si elle peut parfois être trompeuse.)

  • Express feelings using more complex sentence structures
(e.g. Je me sens frustré(e) quand une entreprise ne répond pas aux plaintes des clients.)

  • Share opinions and feelings about social media
(e.g. À mon avis, les réseaux sociaux sont utiles pour rester en contact, mais ils peuvent aussi créer une dépendance.)

  • Write an online review
(e.g. Le service était rapide et le personnel très aimable. En revanche, le produit ne correspondait pas à la description.)

Please note that the learning outcomes may vary depending on the general progress made by the students.
