What is the course about?

This course aims to further improve your upper intermediate French, at a gentle pace. You will build up your confidence by learning the language gradually with the emphasis on speaking and listening. You will increase your fluency and the course will give you a greater insight into French life and culture.

What will we cover?

These may vary according to the needs and interests of the group, but we plan to offer the following:
- topics: current affairs, cultural matters, films or books
- grammar: this will depend on the group’s needs and knowledge (e.g. subjunctive, complex pronouns, indirect speech).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- have more confidence in your ability to understand and be understood in simple French
- understand the main information and some detailed information of written and aural texts
- express your opinion about current affairs
- give your opinion about a film or a book
- discuss French current affairs and cultural matters.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for those who have completed French 4 at a gentle pace: module 2, or anyone with a similar level of knowledge.

Please note this course goes at a slower pace than our standard courses.

If you are not sure about your level, please contact Languages on languages@citylit.ac.uk or check our level assessment chart on: http://www.citylit.ac.uk/self-assess-your-level

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which will enable you to learn at your own pace. Your tutor will use a range of teaching strategies to ensure that you gradually build up your confidence in speaking and listening. Throughout the course, you will receive learning tips on how to speak in groups more effectively and independently (without relying on your notes). You will practise listening to spoken language in ways that will maximise your understanding. There will be activities and advice to help you retain vocabulary.

Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course is based on the tutor’s own resources.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

French 4/5: pratique et perfectionnement module 1. Please book your course early to avoid disappointment.
